If SwiftKey Had A Baby With Swype, Meet SwiftKey Flow

SwiftKey has long been a popular keyboard alternative. What makes it different from your typical stock Android keyboard is that it has a sophisticated learning engine that adapts to your typing and gets better over time. Basically, very similar to voice recognition, that is if you allow Google to learn from it.

Also, you can give SwiftKey access to your social networking accounts, even email account, so it can analyze what you've said and, again, adapt. Swype is another keyboard alternative that, instead of typing, you simply swipe with your finger from word to word. It's actually very accurate and a pretty cool way to quickly say whatever it is you need to say.

Now, there's a new app in town called SwiftKey Flow. It has everything users love about the original SwiftKey, except now it has Swype-like features. Looking at the video at the end of this post, it looks to be very responsive. Of course, if you don't want to use the gesture-based typing, no problem. You can simply turn it off.

However, here's the downside: The app isn't out yet. Although, if you want to get an email when the beta is released, you can go here and enter your email.

Nexus 10 Manual Breaks Out; All But Confirms Samsung Built Tablet

There's going to be a lot of this running up to Google's open Playground event next Monday and whilst we've already had one big leak in the form of the Nexus 4 pre-order page, we've already gotten another juicy leak. We've heard a lot about a Nexus 10 tablet ever since it's smaller brother was released in the summer but, it was all just rumor however, in the last couple weeks we've been hearing ever more about the mystery tablet. Now, two pictures have surfaced from a Korean website, Seeko, that reveal a Quick Start Guide for the Nexus 10 tablet.

There's little new that comes with this leak however, it does confirm that it's built by Samsung thanks to the sketch in the booklet with the "Samsung" logo stamped just under the Nexus logo. As well as this, the booklet details features on any other 10-inch tablet, the usual array of switches and a front-facing cameras as well as a camera on the rear of the device that we didn't see with the Nexus 7, complete with flash. There's also an LED on the front which could well be akin to that of the LED on the Galaxy Nexus.

There are no specs confirmed for the tablet but, from we've been hearing this could well become the Samsung tablet that packs a wonderful 2560×1600 display and a quad-core Exynos 5250. Both of which would make a compelling tablet, Android or otherwise.

It's not clear whether or not these images are legit or not but, with the event so close now it'd be pretty stupid for someone to try and fake something like this and it doesn't appear to be photoshopped in any way. It's exciting to see that we're more than likely to see Google bring more hardware than ever before carrying the Nexus brand. If we don't get any more leaks we'll be ready and waiting with all the news come October 29th.

Google Nexus 7 3G gets priced

October 29th, the day Google's massive event is to start at 10 AM Eastern, is just a few days away at this point. With Android 4.2 and the LG Nexus 4 expected to be talked about, there's another device that's said to be announced as well.

No, we're not talking about the Nexus 7 32GB which will for sure be announced, but the 3G enabled Nexus 7. While pricing for the Nexus 7 32GB has been pretty much nailed down at this point at $249, the 3G version, not so much.

Thankfully though, a Latvian retailer has listed the Nexus 7 3G on their website, including pricing. So how much is it? 219 Latvia Lat for the 32GB with 3G which comes out to $406 or €315.

We can discount there being an 8GB version and will see a 16 and 32GB Nexus 7 with 3G. Come Monday, we'll hear the official pricing, but chances are, the 16GB Nexus 7 3G will run between $249 and $299, while the  32GB Nexus 7 3G will run between $299 and $349.

Either way you look at it, the pricing should be pretty good and will make the iPad Mini yet again look way overpriced for a lower quality screen and hardware. After all, just the 16GB version with 3G comes in at a massive $459 which will be well over $100 more expensive than the 32GB Nexus 7 with 3G.

Do you plan on getting a Nexus 7 with 3G?

Nexus 7 3G - Confirmed by FCC Listing

October 29th is right around the corner and since it's pretty much confirmed that we'll be hearing about the LG Nexus 4 at Google's event, among other things, we also could be hearing about the Nexus 7, now with 3G.

Thanks to an FCC listing, the 3G Nexus 7 has been confirmed and as it isn't too surprising, at least we now know it's actually legit. Google realizes that many people want to use their Nexus 7 while on the go and unfortunately, WiFi isn't as widespread as some of us would prefer.

With the popularity of the tablet, we'll likely see the 3G version available on top carriers. And there won't be an 8GB version either considering that appears to being discontinued because of all the complaints. Not to get too far ahead as nothing has been announced yet, but one would expect that there'd be a 3G version in 16, 32, and maybe even 64GB.

Okay, the 64GB was pulled out of thin air, but 16 and 32 are highly likely.  The 3G Nexus 7 isn't the only thing to be excited about. A manual for the oh so rumored Nexus 10 was leaked today and maybe, just maybe we'll be hearing about it and seeing it first hand next week.

Unbranded Samsung Galaxy SIII device owners in the UK can now expect to start receiving an update to Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean as Samsung ramps up the update process across many European nations. O2, a major wireless carrier in the UK, announced that the updates would begin for their users starting October 19 and would be available through Kies or by auto-update, and now just a few days later unbranded and unlocked phones are getting the same update.

In addition to the rollout in the UK, Samsung is pushing the update across the continent. Android Police reports that today the following nations are eligible for the update:

10-inch Google Nexus tablet, 3G Nexus 7, LG Nexus 4, all coming at Google event: Report

google_event_invitation.jpgThis month end, we are likely to see some interesting revelations from the stables of Apple, Microsoft and Google. While we all know what Microsoft is gearing up for the big Windows 8 and Surface tablet launches, Google recently sent out invites for its upcoming event in New York on October 29.

Carrying the tagline, 'The Playground is Open', details of the event have now surfaced, courtesy The Next Web, which reports that the search giant is expected to announce a refreshed line of its Nexus 7 tablet, a new 10-inch Nexus tablet and the much rumoured next Nexus smartphone from LG.

Citing a "source with knowledge of Google's plans", the 10-inch tablet codenamed 'Manta' manufactured by Samsung will feature a 2560×1600 pixel (16:10) resolution, translating into 300 ppi, outshining the new iPad's pixel density (264 ppi). Details regarding pricing and other hardware specs are currently unknown. As far as the OS is concerned, it is likely to run on Android 4.2 (currently codenamed Key lime Pie).

Further tablet news includes confirmation that a 32GB version of the Nexus 7 will be unveiled. Apart from this, we're also likely to witness another version of the 32GB model that includes a 3G, HSPA+ antenna for on-the-go connectivity. Until now, we have seen the Wi-Fi-only line of Google's Nexus 7 tablet.

Earlier Asus, the manufacturer of the Nexus 7 had mentioned that the tablet will hit Indian shores in November. Last month, other reports had already hinted at a 3G enabled Nexus 7 in the making, though there were no details of pricing or availability at the time.

Talking of the OS, the site confirmed that Android 4.2 will bring Tablet Sharing and a new widget for the Play Store with 'Content in the center'. Tablet Sharing will allow several users to use the same tablet, while keeping the personal account of each user intact on the shared device. Furthermore, the latest OS will also bring an updated version of panoramic view to support both horizontal and vertical movement by default, similar to what Apple added in iOS 6.

Android 4.2 will also debut on the Google's next Nexus smartphone, dubbed as the LG Nexus 4. The smartphone's existence have been rumoured for quite sometime now and it is likely to make an appearance at the said event. Earlier detailed specs revealed show that the LG Nexus 4 will pack in a a 4.7-inch 1280 x 768 display, a quad-core 1.5 GHz Qualcomm APQ8064 Snapdragon processor with 2GB RAM, 16GB internal storage, an 8MP rear-facing and 1.3MP front-facing cameras and a 2100mAh battery.

Android App Review: Flipboard

Thank goodness for the apps that have come along to make online reading beautiful. While Google Reader is helpful for collecting content from a wide variety of sources online, the experience is utilitarian. Sure, it works. It functions just fine, but it isn't a design that immediately pulls you in.

Contrast Reader with Flipboard, and it's easy to see why the app is getting such high reviews from its growing Android user base. Flipboard started off as an iPhone app, and it was very cautious in its migration over to the Android system. Even now, I can install the app on my phone but not on my tablet. (Flipboard has no current plans to move to the Android tablet market, though it is available for the Nexus 7.)

Description: Flipboard describes itself as a "social news magazine" and not just an RSS reader. If you wanted only to have a single place to be able to access your social media accounts, you could use Flipboard. If you wanted to only read articles saved in your Google Reader account, you could use Flipboard for a beautiful interface.

Flipboard works with a wide range of services, including Reader, Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn, and several others. The idea is simple. Flipboard creates a series of pages from your connected networks that you can easily flip through for a quick browsing or a more in-depth reading experience.

How it works: With the default setup of Flipboard, users get news and entertainment feeds from Flipboard. Simply by selecting the image, users can then read the entire article or status update. Flipboard's feeds are curated efforts that are certainly worth your time to look through.

The real strength of Flipboard lies in the additional accounts that can be tied in. By "flipping" to the second page (swiping the bottom of the screen to the top), users have the chance to add their own social media and news feeds by clicking the "More" square. Click "Accounts," and you're on your way. (See the screenshot below.) From the accounts page, you can select practically any social network you use, or you can add another curated feed from Flipboard.

If you're the type of Google Reader or social media user who builds lists and folders to segment out your reading (tech articles in one folder, friends from high school in one social media list), then you'll love Flipboard even more. Not only can you select the main feed from each of these connected networks, but you can also select specific lists or even select feeds. Say you wanted to put the Android Headlines RSS feed or any of the Android Headlines social media streams on your selected reading list in Flipboard, you could easily do so.

Flipboard Account

When you're browsing through your list of articles, you can click on any one to bring up a full version of the article (or at least as much of the article as the RSS reader or social media stream will allow). If there is still additional material to read for that article or if you want to play a video, you can simply click on the article link or the "View Original Article"' link to get to the native app for that material. Unlike some other RSS readers, Flipboard doesn't use its own browser to display an article or video link. Flipboard will rely on web browsers, social media apps, and YouTube to provide a native experience for the material.

By not trying to do too much, Flipboard is able to remain a smooth user experience. The app does allow for some interactivity with social media services like allowing you to "like," "+1," or even retweet a status update that you like.

Flipboard Android Headlines

Opinion: This is by far my favorite way to read news stories on the phone. It's a simple, beautiful presentation, and it makes reading enjoyable. In the same way that Facebook applies a unity to the diversity of information that it serves up, Flipboard simplifies the designs of news sites and blogs to create a comfortable reading experience.

I'd love to have the functionality added in to allow status reports on Facebook and Twitter to be marked as "read." Once an update, I don't want to see that status again when scanning through the system later. If this setting does exists I wasn't able to find it.

Ratings

§ Speed (4/5) – Images can take a while to load when flipping through several pages quickly, but the networks integrate well.

§ Features (5/5) – Flipboard has extensive connectivity with social media and RSS feeds.

§ Theme (5/5) – A beautiful display. A clean, clear reading experience.

§ Overall (5/5) – It's not the only app I use for reading RSS and social media, but it's certainly one of the prettiest.

Pros

§ Simple, clean presentation

§ Wide range of connectivity with social media accounts

§ Easier way to use Facebook on Android that the Facebook app

Cons

§ Photos can take a while to load if you're trying to flip through the pages quickly.

§ No tablet support.

Conclusion: If you use Google Reader on your phone, you should definitely give Flipboard a try. The service nicely syncs with Reader, so your read articles will not continue to show up in Reader or Flipboard unless you go back to search on past articles. The social media accounts are nice, too, though I mainly use Flipboard for article reading. Check it out on the Play store for free.

32GB Nexus 7 Model Appearing in UK Christmas Gift Guide this Week, Launch Date Imminent?

With all of the leaks and rumors we've seen of this 32GB Nexus 7, it's almost likely that'll be around for the Holidays. At least if Google wanted to make some big money that's what they should be doing. Today we are hearing that ITProPortal will be listing the 32GB model of the Nexus 7 in the UK in Argos, Christmas Gift Guide with a starting price of £199.99.

The publication indicates that the 32GB Nexus 7 will replace the 16GB model and the 8GB version will continue selling at it's current price point. Now Google and ASUS really need to bring out this 32GB version and sell it as cheap as possible. Why? We are seeing Windows 8 Tablets starting to hit the market in less than two weeks, and there are those rumors of the iPad Mini being announced soon.

So far we have no idea when the 32GB model will be available, but hopefully it won't be to much longer. I'm expecting something about the 32GB Nexus 7 when Google and LG announce the Nexus 4. Which we still have no idea when that'll be happening.

So existing Nexus 7 owners, how do you feel about a 32GB model hitting the market months after you got yours? Who's going to sell their 16GB and get the 32GB model? Hit up the comments and let us know.

Nexus 7 All-Time Best-Selling Android Tablet In The UK

Well that didn't take long. Just three months after the Nexus 7 was released in the country, it's already become the all-time best-selling Android tablet in the UK. That's quite the accomplishment and the news came from Carphone Warehouse.

At the very low price of £199.99 for the 16GB model, even less for the 8GB, it's a winning combination when you take into consideration the specs. Although Google makes very little on the tablet, the idea is to drive up market share and funnel more money into the ecosystem, AKA the Play Store.

So far, it's working very well with Play Store revenue up 137 percent. Although this news is great for the time being, it's worth noting that the Kindle Fire HD hasn't hit the European markets yet so that could definitely disrupt sales a bit. However, with the 32GB version coming very soon and replacing the 16GB as far as cost, that could definitely be the big deciding factor that has more opting for the Nexus 7 than the latter.

Google originally hoped to sell 3 million tablets in 2012, but with the way things are looking and how well sales have been, that number has more than doubled to as much as 8 million. That's a lot of Nexuses, Nexi, or whatever the plural word is.

Top 10 Best Android Apps for Gamers

Gaming is a lot bigger than it ever has been. That's a phrase that people band around all the time and for those of us that are heavy gamers we might not have noticed. If you take a look around, gaming has become more casual and at the same time a competitive sport. For this Top 10 roundup I'm going to go through the Top 10 apps for gamers out there. I'm not talking games or emulators I'm talking about tools that can help us in our game, help connect with friends or just keep us up-to-date. Come join me as I run through the best apps for gamers on Android!

10. Appy Gamer

We all need to get our hands on news and when it comes to gaming, you need to know what's coming out, what's been updated and what's on sale. With Appy Gamer you can get all of this and the best thing is that it's done it all for you and if you're someone that has one of every current console out there then this is for you as it covers all the major formats. You should never miss a release date again thanks to this.

Play Store Link

9. Spark 360

Often when we think of gaming we turn to the two biggest consoles out there at the moment and they are, of course, the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3. With brilliant exclusive games like Killzone on the PS3 and Halo for the 360 it's difficult to choose between the two. If you couldn't make the decision and bought one of each then this is the app for you. You can sign into both PlayStation Network as well as Xbox Live. Features vary upon either service but, it looks like Xbox Live has more functionality with this app. This is a great and clean way to keep all your gaming friends organised.

Play Store Link

8. IGN Entertainment

These guys have been at it for years and they've amassed serious amounts of content – some of it just appears out of nowhere. Which is brilliant because that game you though nobody had heard off and you wanna is any good? IGN will more than likely have some info on it and a rating. It's also quite quick so, getting hold of reviews and ratings on the go is real easy, staring down the barrel of a game sale can be a hard thing at times and with this app you can get expert advice on what to buy and what not to buy.

Play Store Link

7. Tegra Zone

This one right here is for big Android gamers. Nvidia marketed their Tegra Zone as the best thing in mobile gaming however, it's barely lived up to that promise. In fact, Qualcomm and Sony have managed to secure more exclusive releases than the Tegra Zone. However, it's still a great place to go if you just want games, all of the games here should support extended effects for Tegra devices and as long as you have Tegra 2 at least, you'll be good to go with this. Exclusivity is a hard thing to make successful however, if there was anyone that could do, you'd have thought it was Nvidia. It's disappointing to still be without a Steam for Android.

6. Gameshelf

In these times of high-fidelity gaming and PC gaming againg pushing the envelope it's hard to forget just how much fun the 8-bit and 16-bit classics of the day really were. Sure, they look pretty poor by today's standard but, they still have their charm and if you're anything like me, you can't resist a good few minutes on Super Mario Bros. 3. The orginal. There are a whole lot of emulators out there but, we're not going to go into that – maybe another list? – Gameshelf brings all of your retro games together in one place, stylishly for you to play all from one place. We recently featured Gameshelf in these month's top apps!

Play Store Link

5. TwitchTV

In the life of a gamer, headshots really hurt but, you can't resist watching that killcam back to respect a good kill. For the last couple of years people have wanted to see people play games and have started to respect skill a whole lot more than they ever did. To this end, with TwitchTV you can go ahead and watch as much as you like from the TV-like channel all about gaming. With their Android app you can get hold of video streams over 3G or WiFi, perfect for catching some StarCraft II on the way to work. There's a good variety of games on offer and, nobody gets good on their own so, why not see how the pros play?

Play Store Link

4. PlayStation Official App

It's nice to have an official app for something because, you can – or should be able to – trust the source. With Sony's official app for their PlayStation Network you can sign into your account and check up on the latest news and game releases. However, it's not really that good, it's probably the safest option for PSN but going on how secure Sony is from the past I wouldn't count on anything. It seems as though Sony don't want people connecting to PSN on Android so, Sony, if you're listening – give us a proper app already!

Play Store Link

3. G4

G4TV.com have been around a while now and their official app offering offers some solid content across the board. The application itself is up-to-date, speedy and has a lot of content to get through. There's videos on upcoming games and trailers as well quick and easy access to tips and tricks on how to beat difficult games. Let's not forget that you can also watch Attack of The Show here so, knock yourself out!

Play Store Link

2. Steam

PC gaming took a bit of a hit when consoles really took off and if there's one thing that helped bring the PC back up is Steam. Not only has it done wonders for our wallets though brilliant sales it's revolutionised distribution of games on the PC platform. It's also coming to Linux which, as an Ubuntu user makes me very happy to hear. With the app for Android you can talk to your Steam friends and, more importantly, you'll never miss another sale again – hopefully. Enjoy!

1. My Xbox LIVE

It somewhat pains me to put this app at the top of the list but, realistically, it's the best tool for gamers on Android. With Xbox being more popular than PlayStation there's good chances many of you spend most of your time gaming on there. You can control a whole lot of your Xbox profile from the app – you can change your avatar, message friends to arrange games and track those important achievements. As much as I dislike seeing Metro on Android, this is the closest you'll get to the Xbox Dashboard on Android. Nowadays I'm sure we all have a lot of friends that we contact through gaming primarily and with this you can message to your heart's content. Now if only we could get some Xbox games on Android….
