Lakshmi Mittal, Carlos Slim lose $10 billion in a week

LONDON: The world's richest man and the richest Indian lost, between
them, over $10 billion (around Rs 45,000 crore) in net worth due to
the global stock market crash. While steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal lost
$3.5 billion (around Rs 13,700 crore) due to the fall in his company's
share price, Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim's wealth is reckoned to
have been depleted by $6.7 billion (over Rs 30,000 crore).

Mittal, a non-resident Indian who owns nearly 41% of ArcelorMittal, is
now estimated to be worth $16 billion though his fortune was eroded by
close to a fifth of its value last Sunday. Nonetheless, he remains the
UK's richest individual. ArcelorMittal employs 320,000 people in 60
countries.

A Bloomberg report said Slim's stock portfolio, measured in US
dollars, has dropped about 9.5% since July 29 and is valued at about
$64.4 billion. That compares with a 7.2% slide in the Standard &
Poor's 500 Index.

It was also a miserable week for the world's second richest and third
richest men, Bill Gates and Warren Buffett. Before the Dow Jones made
a small recovery on Friday, Gates's Microsoft Corp slid a significant
5% while Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway dropped 4.3%.

The catastrophic six days for stocks on both sides of the Atlantic
increased fears that this meltdown will lead to a dreaded double-dip
recession. The fall meant that a mind-boggling £2.75 trillion had been
erased off the world markets in 10 days.

Mittal was not the only loser in this market mayhem in Britain.
Commodities trader Ivan Glasenberg, head of Glencore International
also suffered reverses. He lost £788 million as his share price fell
sharply by 13.2%. Others whose fortunes plummeted in Britain included
Mike Ashley, owner of Sports Direct International and Newcastle
Football Club. His worth was reduced by £203.4 million.

Former British finance minister, Alistair Darling, who dealt with the
2008-09 crisis, said: "I have always thought that we won't get a
double-dip recession here in the UK. If you asked me now, well it's on
the cards." The impact of this on emerging economies like China, India
and Brazil will not be favourable either, affecting exports and
growth.

Prime Minister David Cameron, holidaying in Italy, and his finance
minister, George Osborne, vacationing in California, interrupted their
breaks to demand action from European Union leaders. They urged them
to prop up the euro as a currency to prevent a worrying situation from
becoming worse. Britain blames the current calamity on the eurozone
nations' failure to initiate the bailout of Greece, which was agreed
upon two weeks ago.

How to Insert or Add Youtube Video Into Powerpoint Slides?

There could be some reasons why you want to add a video to your presentation slides, for example you want to show a demo, illustration, or maybe a tutorial about something. Adding offline video to your slides is easy to do, yeah I'm sure you can do it. But how to insert or add YouTube video into powerpoint slides? Well, there's no options / menu in ms powerpoint which can enable you to do that. So, in this case we will need an add-on for Microsoft PowerPoint, an additional plugin that allows you to add YouTube video into PowerPoint presentation.

Actually there are some powerpoint add-ins that lets users to insert or add or embed YouTube video into presentation slides and I have tried some of them. And here I would like to share just two of them, only the best ones for you, all free and won't cost you anything! You don't have to install both of them, just choose one that suits your needs.

AuthorSTREAM Desktop
AuthorSTREAM Desktop is a powerpoint add-in that allows users to add YouTube video and online images into ppt slides. It supports Microsoft Powerpoint 2007 and 2010. After you have installed the add-in there will be a new tab: "authorSTREAM" tab. It powered with video search (by YouTube Data API) and image search (Windows Live API), so you can search any videos you want in YouTube and any online images via Microsoft PowerPoint interface. Just type your keyword in the search box and press enter. To embed Youtube video or images into your slide, simply select – press right click and choose insert. You can also upload your slides to authorstream and share with others.

iSpring Free (recommended!)
This is another useful add-in to insert/embed YouTube video into powerpoint presentations. Not only that, it also enable users to insert SWF file into ppt slides. Just like authorSTREAM, iSpring Free will add new tab on your Microsoft PowerPoint interface. On the insert group menu you can either add YouTube video or insert SWF object to your slide. Usually to insert SWF object you should manually enable developer tab and then add Shockwave Flash Object control to your slide but iSpring lets you insert SWF file only with a single click! On the Publish group menu you can publish your presentation to Flash format. iSpring Free can add YouTube video to Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2010, 2007, 2003, and XP.

Smartphones, the cigarettes of the next century?

Smartphones are addictive, according to a study from the British telecom regulator Ofcom, which, like many other studies on the topic, emphasizes that people do things like using handsets in bathrooms in lieu of talking to their children and points out how they are changing social behavior. The press release on the research, issued Thursday, uses the word addiction in a variety of forms five times, including when it says 37 percent of adults and 60 percent of teens admit they are “highly addicted” to the devices.

But why wouldn’t they be? Thanks to apps such as Twitter, texting or even email we are assured that someone is out there on the other end, listening and caring about us. And if the repercussions of such easy and electronically limited socializing mean that we have less time for reflection, or less time for dull or difficult conversations with those who are standing right in front of us (one in ten iPhone users admit to breaking off a relationship via electronic means according to TeleNav), then it’s worth asking what that means for people, society and business. I will confess to sitting in the car texting away in the front seat instead of interacting with my family, or instigating yet another round of campfire songs.

Business benefits from our addiction

My employer and I benefit at the expense of my family (although my husband may not mind losing out on my singing), which is backed up by Ofcom’s results. From the survey:

Thirty per cent of smartphone users say they regularly take part in personal phone calls during working hours, compared with 23 per cent of regular mobile phone users. However, smartphone users are more likely to take part in work calls while on holiday or annual leave. Seventy per cent say they have ever done so, with a quarter (24 per cent) admitting to doing so regularly, compared with just 16 per cent of ordinary mobile phone users.

So there is a productivity boost to be had from partaking of our new addiction, but at what cost? Here the survey disappoints. It spends a lot of time focused on the use of the technology:

The vast majority of smartphone users (81 per cent) have their mobile switched on all of the time, even when they are in bed, with four in ten adults (38 per cent) and teens (40 per cent) admitting using their smartphone after it woke them. Over half (51 per cent) of adults and two-thirds (65 per cent) of teenagers say they have used their smartphone while socialising with others, nearly a quarter (23 per cent) of adults and a third (34 per cent) of teenagers have used them during mealtimes and over a fifth (22 per cent) of adult and nearly half (47 per cent) of teenage smartphone users admitted using or answering their handset in the bathroom or toilet.

But think of the children!

However, the real result is that we don’t know how this will affect people. Can we trace massive e-coli infections to people tapping away on smartphones that have transitioned from the bathroom to the dinner table? Can we say if those teens are texting with their parents while socializing with friends? Can we show that today’s toddlers and pre-schoolers are irreparably damaged by their parents sending emails or tweets instead of talking to their little darlings? Ofcom doesn’t say, and in truth, we don’t know.

What we do know is that this shift and “addiction” is driving people to spend more money and time on these devices, which can be a doubled-edged sword for the mobile operators, but in general is good for the entire mobile ecosystem. The survey notes that “while it took 15 years for half of the UK population to get a mobile phone and 14 years to get multi-channel TV, newer technologies such as online catch up TV and social networking websites reached this landmark in just four years.” People consuming mobile and IPTV or multichannel TV services also spend 12.8 percent more in real terms from a decade ago, a figure which has actually declined since 2005.

It’s not just smartphones, it’s the web.

The addiction to smartphones is just one example of the spread of broadband into everyday life. The Ofcom survey does spend time on that shift as well, which is much deeper and more pervasive than mere smartphone addiction. Those broadband connected devices will change our society and require us to adapt in ways that may be harmful in some cases and beneficial in others.

So rather than using words like “addicted” and emphasizing how much time people spend on smartphones, perhaps it would be better to focus on how broadband, like electricity will change the way people live and the businesses they can build. Sure, electricity used to be considered harmful in some circles (I have a grandparent who considered air conditioning the decline of civilization), but it enabled a great many new industries and changed the way we live. Enabling technologies such as broadband can’t be considered through one lens. So while smartphones may be addictive, they are also the beginning of a new era that will generate new opportunities and shift the way society behaves. We are only just discovering how.

work-life balance of Matt Mullenweg

The article below explains the work-life balance of Matt Mullenweg (Man behind Wordpress)

This article is an excerpt from Inc.com and I would like my readers to go through it so that they can easily manage their work life balance.

As a high school student, Matt Mullenwegworked on open-source software projects in his bedroom. Seven years later, he still does most of his work from home. Mullenweg, 25, is the founder of Automattic, the company behind the open-source blogging toolWordPress and a handful of other software projects. WordPress.com powers 12 million blogs, including those of The New York Times, which invested in Mullenweg's company last year. Although Automattic's headquarters is within walking distance of Mullenweg's San Francisco apartment, he rarely visits the place. Instead, he spends his days either traveling the world to meet WordPress fanatics or holed up in his home office, where he often blasts Jay-Zand writes software code into the wee hours.

In the morning, I have certain aspirations. One of my goals is to avoid looking at the computer or checking e-mail for at least an hour after I wake up. I also try to avoid alarm clocks as much as possible, because it's just nice to wake up without one. I leave my shades up a bit, so I usually wake up about an hour after the sun rises. I usually don't eat breakfast, and I avoid caffeine. I've got enough stimulating things in my life already. I also avoid morning meetings: The earliest meeting I'll do is 11 a.m.

I like to read first thing in the morning. I'm addicted to the Kindle. I read a lot of business books, because I feel like I should figure out how to be a real businessman before someone figures out that I'm not one. I really enjoy reading classics as well, which I try to work in once every two months. Reading is my break. Otherwise, I go to sleep and wake up thinking about WordPress.

I travel a lot, but when I'm in San Francisco, I usually work from home. Everyone else works from home, too. We're a virtual company. We recently got an office on Pier 38, a five-minute walk from my apartment. I'll go to there once a week, usually Thursdays, and for board meetings, which happen about once every two months. We leased it so we wouldn't have to keep borrowing conference rooms from our VC partners. It's kind of sad; we have this great space right on the water -- and six days a week, it's empty. Of the 40 people working for the company, eight are in the Bay Area, but that's just a coincidence. They could be anywhere in the world.

We all communicate using P2, something we launched that allows users to publish group blogs in WordPress. It's a bit like Twitter, but the updates come in real time. With P2, we can share code and ideas instantly. There is a dedicated channel for each part of the company, and when there's a new message, it shows up in red. It may be someone talking about development or what he or she had for breakfast. I also useSkype for one-on-one and mini group chats.

In my home office, I have two large, 30-inch computer monitors -- a Mac and a PC. They share the same mouse and keyboard, so I can type or copy and paste between them. I'll typically do Web stuff on the Mac and e-mail and chat stuff on the PC. I also have a laptop, which I have with me all the time, whether I'm going overseas or to the doctor's office. I'm pretty rough on my laptops. I go through about two a year. I keep a server for my home network in the closet. I really enjoy computer networking. I sometimes do tech support for our employees who live in the Bay Area.

One of my favorite programs that we didn't make is Rescue Time. It runs in the corner of my computer and tracks how much time I spend on different things. I realized that even though I was doing e-mail only a couple of minutes at a time, it was adding up to a couple of hours a day. So I'm trying to reduce that. I have a WordPress plug-in that filters all my messages based on the sender's e-mail address -- so high-priority e-mails go into one folder and the rest go into others. Tim Ferriss, who wrote The 4-Hour Work Week, advocates checking e-mail twice a week, but that is too severe for me. Instead, I'm trying to implement Leo Babauta's approach from The Power of Less. He suggests small steps, like checking e-mail five times a day instead of 10. It's like dieting: People who binge diet gain it all back. That happens to me with e-mail.

I listen to music every day, a lot of jazz -- Dexter Gordon and Sonny Rollins. I also like Jay-Z and Beyoncé. I have an analog stereo that was hand built in Japan by a guy who makes a few systems a year. The aural experience is mind-blowing. Music helps me when I'm coding, which is still my priority. When you're coding, you really have to be in the zone. I'll listen to a single song, over and over on repeat, like a hundred times. And I turn off instant message and e-mail. If you are taken out of the flow, if that little toaster pops up that says you've got mail -- and you look at it, you've lost it. You're juggling variables and functions and layouts. The moment you look away, it all falls to the ground, and you spend 10 minutes getting it all back in the air again.

I also manage the support, usability, and product development people who are scattered all over the globe, from Alabama to Ireland to Bulgaria. My management strategy is to find extremely self-motivated and talented people and then let them go. There's no manager looking over your shoulder every day, so you need to be able to completely direct yourself. For every person we hire, we might get 800 applications. We always start people on a contract basis. And many of the people we've hired are contributors to the open-source project. It's what they were doing for fun at night after they'd already worked for eight hours a day, only now they'll get paid for it.

I'm also the primary person on Akismet, Automattic's anti-spam software for websites, which we created from scratch. We just added the first engineer six months ago, but for the past four years, it's been just me. I decided to do it because I was worried about my mom. She hadn't started a blog yet, but I had this crazy fear that when she did, she'd be bombarded by spam for Viagra and think that had something to do with what I did all day.

How to Export Email Addresses of all your Facebook Friends

Search the Facebook Apps directory for something like “export contacts” and you’ll come across quite a few applications that sound as if they can transfer your friends contact information out of Facebook.

There’s an app called “Export Friends” that will save you friends names, city, birthday and their current location in a CSV (text) file that you then import into Excel, Gmail or any other web email program.

Then there are social plug-ins that can sync photos and status updates of your Facebook friends with matching contacts in Outlook.

The problem is that none of these apps can download what  you are looking – the phone numbers and email addresses of your Facebook friends. There are Greasemonkey scripts and other hacks that can pull this information from Facebook through “web scraping” but don’t ever take that route as Zuckerberg’s army might ban your account forever.

Export Email Addresses of your Facebook Contacts

Facebook APIs don’t expose email addresses of users and hence none of the Facebook apps can provide you with the actual contact data of your friends. There’s however a simple (and perfectly legal) workaround that can help you easily download all your friends email addresses from Facebook’s walled garden.

The trick, as you can see in the video, is actually quite simple.

Go to address.yahoo.com and click the Facebook icon. A login dialog should pop-up, just sign-in with your Facebook credentials and within seconds, you entire Facebook address book will be available inside your Yahoo Mail Account. Once the import is done, click this link to download a CSV file with the email addresses of all your Facebook contacts to your desktop.

You can then import the CSV file into Gmail Contacts, LinkedIn, your phone address book or any of the social sites where you want to connect with your existing Facebook circle.

Update: If Yahoo! is unable to import your Facebook Address book, open your Facebook page and choose “Application Settings” under Account. Next remove the “Yahoo! Contact Importer” application from your Facebook profile and try the steps mentioned in the video again.

Blackberry News- BBM 6.0 with social features officially available

I'd like to say the hype has finally come to fruition, but we're still not over the hype period yet. Yes, RIM officially released BBM 6.0, which includes social integration for many apps. Plenty of apps are compatible right out of the box, as you can see above with Backgammon King. Not only can you connect with friends to play the game, but you can invite your BBM contacts to download the game themselves (obviously, allowing you to play them). Chatting within the app is another great feature. There's plenty more you can do with it, but there's still plenty of room for the platform to grow.

Once there is a more robust app marketplace, you'll be able to discover new apps and games through your friends' profiles. If they're using something with BBM 6, you can give it a try, too. The only drawback is that there isn't much developed for the platform right now. Inside BlackBerry has a list of 25 apps that are compatible, and only a few will stand out to the average BlackBerry user. That is, we don't have a lot to work with at this very moment, though the available options — such as ScoreMobile, Poynt, and foursquare — are definitely of interest to many BlackBerry users.

And so, as with the PlayBook, we'll have to wait for future developments to realize the full potential of the socialized BBM. Given the launch, it appears to be worth the wait. But as with any platform, it needs both the software and the users. So head to App World and download BBM 6.0, and start to spread the word. The platform is only as good as its users.
