Kindle on the Blackberry PlayBook – Amazon Kindle Cloud Reader
Amazon Kindle Cloud Reader is now available. While it's clear that PlayBook support was not a first priority, with a couple of tweaks the PlayBook is supported. It's not perfect, but it's a fair bit better than the love Amazon has shown for PlayBook to date (that is to say – none at all).
To get started visit the link below from your PlayBook and sign in with your Amazon credentials:
Some issues and the workaround for them:
- When you first run, you must view in Portrait mode or else you won't be able to get off of the initial screen that instructs you to increase storage size when prompted.
- The default cover view does not seems to scroll properly on the PlayBook. If you tap the list view icon, it works correctly; and scrolling in list view also works correctly.
- The web app does successfully detect your offline/online state for viewing "cloud" books.
- If you are viewing a book and lose connection/disconnect, you can continue reading without any problems. But if you launch the browser with no connection it does not appears to work b/c the browser reports a connection error before checking to see if the content is available offline.
- In my brief testing so far, "Download and Pin" (appears when you tap-hold on a book) seems to work well – but again with the caveat from above. You must load the initial reader page prior to losing your connection/disconnecting. Once a book is downloaded for offline viewing, the "Downloaded" tab shows it and allows you to view it even if you have no connection.
- Best viewed in fullscreen mode.
I'll see if I can't whip up a "Kindle App" for the weekend, which will give us a launcher separate from the web browser and true full-screen. (If somebody else doesn't beat me to it – I'm limited to my laptop for the next couple of days as I'm attending the BBM Hackathon, and don't have the full PB dev environment set up.) Hopefully I can find a way to force an "offline" mode as well, so that you can launch it with no connection at all.
Some first impressions:
- Landscape mode is usable after the first screen, but I have found that text in landscape mode is oddly blurry at any font size, even though the interface resizes well.
- Font and color options are standard Kindle fare, it's good to see that they're all present.
- Annotations can be read but not added as far as I can tell.
While I can't help but wish it was a little better integrated with the PlayBook's features, this effectively fills a gap many of us have been waiting for since the PlayBook launch.

Is your growing company trying to land bigger clients? Or is your sales team looking for leads? If you ever send e-mails that don't elicit a response, there's probably something you could improve about your strategy for crafting an introduction letter.
Here is an excerpt from the interview hosted at inc.com. Jill Konrath, an internationally recognized sales strategist and author or SNAP Selling, to share her tips for writing e-mails that won't get deleted.
1. Eliminate Delete-Inducing Words
Get rid of all verbiage that activates the delete response. Here are some serious offenders: exciting, state-of-the-art, solution, partner, leading edge, passion, unique and one-stop shopping.
2. Keep Your Message Simple
Your email needs to be less than 90 words. Use 2-sentence paragraphs so it can be scanned. Stick with common black fonts (no colors) and never include more than one link or attachment.
3. Align With Their Objectives
Research your prospect's specific company, industry or position. Make sure your e-mail mentions an important business objective, strategic imperative, issue or challenge. Relevance is essential.
4. Focus on Immediate Priorities
Identify key business events that may be impacting your prospect's priorities and tie your message into that. Examples might be: relocations, mergers, management changes or new legislation.
5. Be an Invaluable Resource
Your product or service may be a commodity, but you're not. In your e-mails, focus on the ideas, insights and information you can share that will be of value to your prospect in reaching their goals.
6. Craft Enticing Subject Lines
Your subject line determines if your message gets read. Avoid sales hype and focus on business issues such as: "Quick question re: outsourcing initiative" or "Reducing product launch time."
7. Launch a Campaign
Do eight to 12 touches (via e-mail and phone) over a four-to-six week time period, with each contact building off the previous one. Provide links to resources. Spotlight the value of changing from the status quo.
Jill Konrath is an internationally recognized sales strategist and bestselling author ofSNAP Selling. Her previous book, Selling to Big Companies, has been an Amazon Top-20 Sales Book since 2006, and has been called a "must-read" for salespeople. She has consulted with companies such as IBM, GE, and Staples. These tips were written by Konrath, and provided by Konrath and GoToMeeting, on which she presented a webinar of the same title.

Have you ever wanted a look inside the mind of a mobile handset designer? Of course you do, and so do we, for that matter. Donn Koh, lead designer of smartphones like

T-Mobile's myTouch 4G, has in-depth breakdowns of the design process on his personal website for our perusal. Check out the source for the full rundown, and peep another sweet design shot after the break -- especially if you enjoy well-designed, well thought out tech.

Amazon releases web-based Kindle Cloud Reader app, optimized for iPads
changed its Kindle iOS app to comply with Apple's
revised in-app subscription policy, but the retailer has now come out with its own, web-based alternative, known as the Kindle Cloud Reader. Compatible with both Chrome and Safari, the new app is essentially a browser version of the Kindle eBook reader, providing PC, Mac and Chromebook users with access to their digitized libraries. The tool also offers local storage, allowing for offline reading, though Amazon's device limit still applies, so if your library's already strewn across multiple gadgets, the app's reading functionality may be limited. The company unveiled the Cloud Reader today with relatively little fanfare or explanation, but its site highlights the service's main attractions, including its iPad optimization. Interestingly enough, the reader still isn't compatible with iPhones (or, as
Android Community discovered, any Honeycomb tablets), though we imagine it's only a matter of time before Amazon's cloud coverage expands even further.

Here's Why Wall Street Is Killing AOL
AOL reported its first quarter of advertising growth this morning, and
the company said it was making real headway in its comeback story.
Wall Street says otherwise:
AOL shares are off more than 20 percent on a day when the market is perking up, just a tiny bit – the Nasdaq is currently up 1.64 percent.
What gives? AOL CEO Tim Armstrong told analysts today that he wasn't happy with
some of the company's results. But earlier this morning, when I told him that investors were dumping the stock, he told me a sell-off against the broad market uptick would be "
hard to comprehend."
So here's an explainer, via Citigroup's Mark Mahaney. The analyst didn't lower his "hold" rating on AOL after this morning's earnings, but he didn't see enough to make him happy, either. We'll use him, via the note he published today, as a rough proxy for disaffected AOL investors:
• Revenue was more than Wall Street expected, but the bonus dollars came from AOL's less profitable network business, not its core display business.• Meanwhile, that display business actually got weaker this quarter: If you pretend that AOL owned TechCrunch and HuffingtonPost a year ago (i.e. "pro forma results"), then display ad sales would have increased 9 percent this quarter, down from 12 percent in Q1.• Those display dollars may have been at risk even before we were facing Maybe Recession 2.0, or whatever we're going to call it: The company "noted significant weakness in June & July."• Earnings are shrinking: "EBITDA declined over 60%+ Y/Y vs. downapprox 57% Y/Y in Q1; this marks one of the biggest declines we've seen in years."• And earnings will continue to shrink in the near-term: The company lowered its EBITDA guidance for the rest of the year.

Riots in London fueled partly by messages sent via BlackBerry Messenger
England is ready to host one of the biggest game in the world next year. Is England ready for it ?
A few short years ago, if a riot broke out somewhere in the world, you found out about it the next morning when your newspaper was delivered, or on the 6 o'clock news. Nowadays, news spreads at the click of a button, with millions of smartphones connected to Twitter and Facebook. Riots in Vancouver less than two months ago were seen almost instantly through pictures and videos as people used smartphones to record what they saw and upload to social networking. As a result, police were able to apprehend many people who were involved in the looting and destruction.
This weekend rioting again broke out, this time in London. Stemming from a peaceful protest over the shooting of a man named Mark Duggan, things quickly escalated and the gathering erupted into violence. As seen in Vancouver, the destruction and looting was spread across social media and in moments the whole world knew what was happening, including pictures of the people responsible.

BlackBerry vs iPhone vs Android – it’s Klout Klobberin’ time!
Klout recently pitted iPhone and Android against each other in a no holds barred Klout showdown. They compared the average Klout scores of both iPhone and Android influencers. After the smoke cleared, iPhone came out on top with a 42.0 to 40.6 win. So where does BlackBerry come into play? Klout was later asked to throw BlackBerry into the mix. From the onslaught rose a new champion…BlackBerry (in typical
RIMPIRE Strikes Back fashion) emerged with a Klout score of 43.6!!

Review: BatteryPlus for BlackBerry smartphones - promotional pricing available!
You have plenty of charging options to choose from. There are times when you find yourself far away from any type of charger (or outlet) and without a spare battery to swap with. You don't necessarily want to turn off the radio to optimize power, as you need to get a few things done asap.
Having a battery monitoring app like BatteryPlus may be just what the battery doctor ordered. The application consistently monitors your battery level, provides estimated battery life and collects a log of your battery level over a period of time. It even starts to shut down processes based on battery level, low signal or even when your BlackBerry is idle. Let's see how BatteryPlus handles a battery of tests.
