Top 10 Best Android Phones, Monthly Power Rankings – November 2012
As we enter one of the last month before the holiday season reaches fever pitch it's about time that we starting seeing new phones hit the market and we have done over the past month. Some have been less new than others but, the fact is that are new phones on the market and with price drops liking to come across all carriers the choice is perhaps even more difficult than before. If you're looking to get your hands on a new phone for Christmas then now is about the time to start getting serious about looking. There have been some new phones coming out that could change the previous decision you told yourself you were set on. If you want to know what's hot for the cold month of November then read on my friends!
10. Droid RAZR MPrevious Rank #4
§ Dual-core 1.5Ghz Snapdragon S4 CPU § 4.3" Super AMOLED Display at 960×540 with 256ppi § WiFi b/g/n § 4G LTE on Verizon § 8GB of Storage with room for microSD card § 1GB RAM § 8MP rear-facing camera with VGA front-facing camera § 2000 mAh Battery § Launched with Android 4.0.4, Jelly Bean update promised 9. Motorola Photon QPrevious Rank #9 The Photon Q is very much an undersold device on Sprint but that doesn't make it one of the best on the network either. There are a lot of good things to like about the Q, for instance, its QWERTY keyboard and a decent looking display but, at the end of it all it's just getting by on some midling specs. With the same qHD resolution that's let the One S down it's hard to recommend the Q to somebody. However, if you're someone coming from a BlackBerry or you think you'd be better on a hardware keyboard then you can do a lot worse than this. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that this is your best when it comes to Android and hardware keyboards. § Dual-core 1.5Ghz TI OMAP § 4.3" 960×540 LCD – at 256 ppi § WiFi b/g/n § 4G on Sprint's small LTE Network § 8GB Storage with room for microSD § 1GB RAM § 8Mp rear-facing camera with HD front-facing camera § 1785 mAh Battery § Launched with Android 4.0, no word of an update to Jelly Bean 8. HTC One XPrevious Rank #2 The One X has been the flagship of the One Series for quite some time now and it's a real shame that it's only available on AT&T in the States but with that comes LTE support and after a recent price drop it's perhaps one of the best phones you can get on the network right now. There's a lot to be said about the phone's gorgeous screen and while it's not the fastest phone out there anymore it more than keeps up. As with any other phone from HTC there are the usual questions about software support but it looks like HTC will be delivery Jelly Bean soon but until then you're stuck with Ice Cream Sandwich and HTC's Sense UI on top. There's a whole lot to love about this phone and if you live in an area with AT&T LTE then this is one of the best phones for you. § Dual-core 1.5Ghz Snapdragon S4 § 4.7" Super IPS display at 1280×720 – 312 ppi § WiFi b/g/n § 4G on AT&T's LTE Network § 32GB of Storage, no microSD card slot § 1GB RAM § 1800 mAh battery § Launched with Android 4.0 with 4.1 update promised 7. Sony Xperia TLPrevious Rank – New Entry! It's perhaps a little strange to see a Sony phone in a list that is normally dominated by Samsung and HTC but here they are. With another phone for AT&T they've bought the James Bond to the States in time for the film's release and it's interesting to see that this time around there hasn't been many changes unlike the Xperia S and the Xperia ION. The Xperia TL has a lot to it and comes with an excellent 13 MP camera and hardware button to make it easier than ever to take photos on the go. Android 4.0.3 is unfortunately on board but this will be getting an update to Jelly Bean but whether that means 4.1 or 4.2 is up to Sony and we really couldn't say. It looks like Sony have finally bought a decent Android Smartphone to the States but, is it too little, too late for the Japanese company? § Dual-core 1.5Ghz Snapdragon S4 Plus § 4.55" TFT LCD at 1280×720 with 323 ppi § WiFi b/g/n § 4G LTE with AT&T's LTE Network § 16GB or 32GB of Storage – with microSD slot § 1GB RAM § 13MP rear-facing camera with 1.3MP front-facing § 1850 mAh Battery § Launched with Android 4.0, update to 4.1 on the way 6. Motorola Droid RAZR HD and RAZR MAXX HDPrevious Rank – New Entry! The new phones from Moto have been received pretty well and while they might just be evolutions of what we've been seeing for some time with the Droid RAZR line the new devices still manage to stay current and up-to-date. There's a lot to the duo of phones that share everything beside the huge battery that's in the Droid RAZR MAXX HD and they're both for different people. If you need a brilliant high-end good looking device then you go for the RAZR HD but if you want the same phone and you don't care how thin it is then you'll be going for the MAXX HD and reaping the benefits of a much larger battery and a much longer usage time. § Dual-core 1.4Ghz Snapdragon S4 Plus § 4.7" Super AMOLED Display 1280 x 720 – 312 ppi § WiFi b/g/n § 4G LTE on Verizon § Bluetooth 4.0 with LE+EDR § 16GB of Storage with room for microSD § 1GB RAM § 8MP rear-facing camera with 1.3MP front-facing § 2530 mAh Battery – 3300 mAh on the MAXX HD § Launched with Android 4.0 but will get 4.1 5. HTC One X+Previous Rank – New Entry!
If you're HTC you're probably wondering how you can get something new out there in order to boost your sales at Christmas, right? Well, HTC might not have that with the One X+ but they're certainly betting that they do. It's yet again, only available on AT&T which is a real bummer for those that missed out on the device the first time around. When it comes down to the phone's specs, it's essentially the One X we all knew and loved with a very different heart at the center of it all. The One X+ is packing an improved version of the Tegra 3 that was at the heart of the One X internationally, it's got a Tegra 3 quad-core clocked at 1.7 Ghz which will certainly help when it comes to games and it's also packing 64GB of storage! § 1.7 GHz quad-core NVIDIA Tegra 3 CPU § 4.7-inch SuperLCD2 display at 1280×720 312 ppi § 1GB of RAM § 64GB of storage no micro SD card slot § Internal speaker with built-in amplifier § 8.0MP rear camera with 1.6MP front-facing camera § 4G LTE with AT&T § Wifi, Bluetooth and NFC support § 2100mAh battery § Android 4.1 Jelly Bean OS with HTC Sense 4+ 4. LG Optimus GPrevious Rank – New Entry! LG seem to have finally managed to bring a device to more than one carrier that brings with it top of the line specs and polish. Featuring the same specs that are present in the Nexus 4 and a level of design that we'd expect more from Samsung than we would LG there's a lot to to the Optimus G. It looks LG might finally able to enjoy some success when it comes to the US market and we certainly hope so because after all, the more competition there is, the better. With the Optimus G LG are pushing the limits of what they can put inside a smartphone and design. However, when it comes to choosing this over the Nexus 4 there's perhaps one thing that might sway your decision: LTE. § 4.7″1280 x 768 pixel resolution (320 ppi) § Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro § 8 MP rear-facing camera with 1.3 MP front-facing § 4G LTE on AT&T's Network § 16 GB storage § 2 GB RAM § 802.11 b/g/n § NFC § 2,100 mAh § Android 4.1
3. Samsung Galaxy Note IIPrevious Rank – New Entry!
With the Galaxy Note Samsung has managed to convince that not only are big phones quite useful but also that we'd quite like the pen back in our lives. The S-Pen is something that I'm sure a lot of users out there liked about the original and now with the lastest in the family of gigantic of phones there's even more to the S-Pen and it's suite of applications. Not to mention the overhaul that has been made to the internals of the device, packing a quad-core monster and 2GB of RAM there's little you can't do with the Note II, it's also on a price drop at T-Mobile so, if you're looking to get your hands on one of these for the holidays then now might be the perfect time to convince yourself that you need one. § Quad core 1.6 GHz Exynos 4412 § 5.5″ Super AMOLED Display at 1280 x 720 – 265 ppi § 2GB of RAM § 16GB storage with room for microSD card § 8MP rear-facing camera with 1.9MP front-facing § 4G LTE on Sprint, AT&T and Verizon § WiFi, Bluetooth and NFC § 3100 mAh § Android 4.1 Jelly Bean 2. Galaxy S IIIPrevious Rank #1
Samsung's latest flagship has been on shelves for some time now and it shows no signs of slowing down, there's no reason to think that is either. Having sold 30 Million units of the phone in just 157 days, there's got to be something magic that Samsung are doing with the phone. Or, it could just be that the Galaxy S III is offering everything its high-end friends are with the added benefits of a removable battery and a microSD card slot. It's a phone to behold and has recently gotten and update to 4.1 bringing it inline with everything but the soon to be released Nexus 4. The Galaxy S III is perhaps the best Samsung device yet as it appeals to pretty much everyone and if you don't like the S III then you're crazy, sorry but, you're crazy. § Dual-core 1.5Ghz Snapdragon S4, Quad-core 1.4Ghz Exynos in some markets § 4.8" Super AMOLED HD Display at 1280×720 – with 306ppi § 4G on AT&T, Sprint and Verizon – HSPA+ on T-Mobile § 16, 32 or 64GB storage with room for microSD § 2GB RAM § 8MP rear-facing camera with 1.9MP front-facing camera § 2100 mAh battery § Launched with Android 4.0 with Jelly Bean update rolling out now 1. Google Nexus 4Previous Rank – New Entry!
There are no surprises here, we give it up, we're unoriginal and a boring bunch but when you think about it, how can the Nexus 4 be anything but the best Android out right now? There's a whole lot packed in this beautiful body that LG has lovingly crafted for Google and when you look at the spec sheet and then go and see how much it costs – you'll be blown away. The first Nexus to pack a quad-core in it is certainly an improvement over the Galaxy Nexus and will continue to get better and better with advanced versions of Android. They've outdone themselves with the Nexus 4 and it's said that this is the best made Nexus since the Nexus One. § 4.7″1280 x 768 pixel resolution (320 ppi) § Quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro § 8 MP rear-facing camera with 1.3 MP front-facing § 4G HSPA+ up to 42mbps § 16 GB storage § 2 GB RAM § 802.11 b/g/n § NFC § 2,100 mAh § Android 4.2 Jelly Bean

Google’s Nexus 10: The Best Android Tablet Yet?
Over the last few weeks it's hard to count how many times we've heard mention of a Nexus 10 device. We've been hearing of the actual device in question from Samsung for quite some time but, as soon as the Nexus 7 hit the wild, rumors exploded and whilst it certainly seemed like a possibility it didn't seem like something Google would do, especially when taking the XOOM into account. However, Google seem happy to do a lot of things they wouldn't normally do. With the Nexus 4, Google have partnered with LG for the first time, the Nexus 7 was a first for Google and ASUS, not to mention the first 7″ tablet that got more than a blessing from Google.
What of this Nexus 10 then, is it just a larger Nexus 7, or is there something bigger than that going on here? if anything, the two Nexus tablets certainly share some design cues, something I'm pleased about – in order to creat a coherent family of devices, there needs to be a common look and feel. On the inside though, the two brothers don't share much at all, with the Nexus 10 taking the lead when it comes to specs. Google's latest tablet comes packing the following:
§ 10.05-inch "True RGB Real Stripe PLS" at 2560 x 1600 (298.9 ppi compared to the iPad with Retina display at 263.92 ppi)
§ Dual-Core Cortex A-15 CPU, of Exynos 5000 Series presumably
§ Mali T604 quad-core GPU
§ 2GB RAM
§ 16GB storage with no room for microSD
§ 5 megapixel rear-facing camera with flash and 1.9MP front-facing camera
§ WiFi, Dual NFC Chips, one at the front and one at the back, Bluetooth 4.0
§ Stero Front-facing Speakers
§ Android 4.2 Jelly Bean
§ microUSB as well as microHDMI
§ 9000 mAh battery for 10 hrs of HD video
§ 605g Weight
That's an impressive spec sheet but, what of the device itself? Well, you could say that the tablet isn't too far removed from the Galaxy Tab line of tablets, it is made by Samsung after all. That's not the case however, thanks to some additions to the hardware, the device is said to feel incredibly solid in the hand. With a soft touch backing to the device, it's easy to hold in the hand and with a generous bezel, holding a 10-inch tablet has never been so easy.
As for the main attraction, the Nexus 10 certainly gives the retina display a run for its money, perhaps outright besting the device. The Verge have had the immense pleasure of getting some quality time with the latest tablet and when directly compared to the retina display they said that text was crisp and colors vivid. Viewing angles are something that the Nexus 10 will boast plenty of, perhaps it's not too important on a 7-inch device but something a little larger that's easily share will need some good angles.
As for accessories the device is said to be coming with a specialised cover in which the rear of the device comes away to be replaced with this cover. It's something that sounds a lot like the covers for the Note II and the Galaxy S III. This cover also sends the tablet to sleep or wakes it up however, it's said to be no good for a stand and they're might be something else to fit that purpose.
On the software side of things, the Nexus 10 does indeed come with Jelly Bean, of the 4.2 variety and whilst we'll have some more info on that for you there a couple of big changes that affect the Nexus 10. For instance, the UI of the tablet layout has been changed to that of the Nexus 7 layout. With the three buttons that first made their appearance in Honeycomb shifted to the middle of the bar. Whether or not this is a good idea or not is something we'll have to reserve judgement on but for now it looks like it is a little less confusing.
Personally, I can't wait to get my hands on one of these bad boys and whilst I'm a little unsure of the placement of the action buttons I'm sure Google did this for good reason after all, the man leading the ship on UX is one Matias Duarte, who has definitely given Android a shot in the arm since he came on in 2010.

Nexus 10 About Screen Leaked, Confirms Multiple User Support in Android 4.2?
Today we've seen our fair share of leaks and rumors. Plenty of Nexus 10 leaks today. It started with Vic Gundotra posting some pictures to his Google+ account this morning that, according to the EXIF data, was taken with a Nexus 10. And they looked gorgeous. Now, a commenter over Gizmodo posted a picture of the devices about screen. The commenter also said that he has held the device and it looks just like the pictures in the manual leaked yesterday. This is what he had to say: I've held it. It's a Samsung 10″ tablet that looks exactly like the user manual that leaked. All plastic, very thin, front firing stereo speakers. Running Jelly Bean, not Key Lime Pie. It's designed to be held in landscape rather than portrait. Very fast, but the About screen didn't have any hardware details. Codename: Manta So there's that Manta tablet we've been seeing in so many server logs lately. And if you look at the left side, right about the "Personal" section, you'll see "Users". That's new. Does that mean we'll get Multiple-User Support in Android 4.2? When Android Police tore down the leaked Android 4.2 last week, they came across some code for Multiple-User support, but we weren't to sure if that would be a 4.2 feature or just the groundwork with it coming in Android 5.0 (At Google I/O 2013?). Now yes, About screens can be faked. And as many fakes and hoaxes as we've seen this Nexus season it could definitely be a fake. So take this with a grain of salt and wait until Monday morning. We'll definitely learn more. |
Top 10 Best Android Apps Monthly – November 2012
It's been a strange month for apps, with people seemingly avoiding an app launch until Google have held their event on the 29th. Whether or not this is the case, there has been a smattering of good apps and once again we've rounded up the best 10 for the month and presented them for you here. We do this every month and we'll continue to do it. We're always open for suggestions and a healthy discussion in the comments is always something we like to see. Without further a do, these are the Top 10 Apps for the Month of November! 10. Keymonk Keyboard
There's been a couple of things in the keyboard space lately, just a few days ago we got to see SwiftKey's new project Flow, a swype type keyboard from the folks that have delivered arguably the best keyboard on Android for some time now. Here, however, in Keymonk we have something a little different even still. This isn't your typical keyboard but, that isn't to say that it's not a good choice or something that you can used to. You never know, after giving Keymonk a try you might have found your new keyboard? 9. NixPic
This is a real unique app in that it shares images with people but, the images show up for only a few seconds and then they disappear. This sounds pretty stupid on the face of things but when you think about it, having to work with only a few seconds can help you be creative with your pictures in a different way, you can send whatever you want for example and have a lot of fun with it. With NixPic you can send some riskier photos or just those down right hilarious moments that can only be shared in a few seconds. 8. EasyFocus
With all the talk of filters and HDR in mobile photography these days it's perhaps hard to forget that focus is something that can dramatically alter how our your photos look. Being able to focus properly and akin to that of a dSLR on your smartphone gives you a whole lot more flexibility when it comes to framing your shots, what subject matter you can get in and how things will look on the other side. It's a great app if you're more interested in taking a good photo as oppose to editing one into a good photo. 7. Fontly
If you're someone like me, you appreciate typography quite a lot. I've never been the typical arty type but I absolutely love the effect a good font can have on something. It's no longer just in written word either, with publications moving to the web more and more and institutions like ourselves becoming coming place, typography is a key thing of modern design. With Fontly, you can take photos of examples out in the wild, share it with others and discover other examples mapped by others. This is great if you're looking for inspiration for an upcoming project or some form of art for a new move. It's a great little app and something I'll be experimenting with for some time to come. 6. News Fragments
A lot of us rely on Google News, sometimes we don't know that we do as a lot of widgets us it as their main source. If you're somebody that conciously navigates to Google News daily then this app is going to make you very 'appy indeed. The app draws from Google News in your area and neatly presents you with up-to-the-minute news as soon as it hits Google News. The app is a simple, holo themed app that doesn't try to do too much and keeps a wonderfully minimal look that we certainly wish other apps would follow. 5. GoToMyPC
This is one of those apps that might take some getting used to but once you've gotten used to the app you'll wonder how you did without it. Essentially, GoToMyPC on Android is the same as it is on the PC, it handles the same functions and lets you access your PC from anywhere however, with Android now it really is ANYWHERE. The app works on a variety of devices and thankfully, Citrix have had larger screened devices in mind. There's little more to it than that but, being able to hook into your PC from anywhere in the world is really pretty cool, makes you feel like James Bond almost! 4. Untappd
It's no great secret that the West is a big drinker and there's nothing with that at all, quite frankly, without such a social lubricant I think they'd be even more crime. Enough of that though, here's to beers! We all love to drink but in the last few years it's become more common to appreciate what form our alochol comes in and not just take it in whatever form and how much we can. There's nothing better than finding somewhere with a brilliant beer on offer, or maybe, with this new app there is. With Untappd you can share locations of great beer – craft or otherwise – and you can also find new places to enjoy the golden nectar. Have at it folks, and drink safely, yeah? 3. Orbitz Hotels
Finding somewhere to stay can be really stressful, especially when you're on a budget or completely new to the area. With the arrival of Orbitz on Android though, things should become a lot easier from now on. You can do everything you expect to do on the website and you can take it everywhere you go, making that perfect deal even easier to find! It's well worth checking out and is a quality app to accompany a quality service! 2. Wacom Bamboo Paper
This is a begrudging choice for me. I absolutely love styli now, this isn't to say I have a Galaxy Note no, I just have a really fancy, quality Stylus and when I saw that the folks over at Wacom had FINALLY brought their Paper app to Android I was really quite excited but, I was cripplingly disappointed to realise that Wacom took a payoff from Samsung for exclusivity on the Note and S III line of phones. I reached out to Wacom to see what the deal was and apparently they're "working hard" to get it working on other devices, I'm sure they are. It's a very good app however and on the Galaxy Note line of phones it's yet another string to the phone's bow. It's performance on the GSIII meanwhile also suggests good performance for regular phones but, realistically, Wacom should have released this on Android outright. 1. Dragon Mobile Assistant
This app hit the scene quite recently and it's another in a long line of Siri like apps for Android. That isn't to say that the app isn't great in its own right because it is, it's brilliant. Dragon Mobile Assistant takes on more a roll of actually assisting you rather than just another glorified voice search app, it's tied in to a whole lot of online services and will respond to commands as well, making this a good choice for those looking to use their hands a little less. The app will only run on Android devices running Ice Cream Sandwich and above but, by now, we hope that isn't a problem for a lot of you. Go ahead and give the app a try, you might just save yourself some time!

Google’s Nexus event cancelled due to Hurricane Sandy
According to CNet, Google e-mailed reporters today saying that it was canceling the event because of concerns surrounding Hurricane Sandy.
Microsoft is also due to launch Windows 8 mobile on Monday in San Fransisco and can now breathe a sigh of relief that Google's event won't upstage there. It's not clear when the Google event will take place now.
The Nexus 4 smartphone which will be manufactured by LG was expected to be launched in the event. There have numerous leaks of this device and it is widely believed that LG Optimus G will be relaunched as the Nexus 4. The rumoured specifications of the device include a 4.7-inch screen with 1280×768 resolution, true HD and IPS (In Panel Switching), a 13-megapixel autofocus camera and Qualcomm's quad-core processor which clocked at 1.5Ghz along with a 2GB RAM. These specs are pretty much the same as the current the LG Optimus G smartphone.
The bigger question are about the Android build on the Nexus device as it has been reported that this could be the Android 4.2 named Key Lime Pie. However, some sources have also said it will be build 4.2 but with Jelly Bean branding.
The Nexus 10-inch tablet with Samsung is the other big device that Google were expected to launch. According
The Next Web, who quote a source,
the tablet goes under the name "Codename Manta", runs Google's new Android 4.2 operating system (previously referred to as Key Lime Pie, but is set to retain the Jelly Bean branding), and will offer a 2560×1600 pixel (16:10) resolution, which we believe will offer around 300 pixels per inch (PPI) compared to the new iPad's 264 PPI.
The iPad has a screen resolution of 2048 x 1536 pixels with a screen size of 9.7 inch diagonally. In effect, the Nexus 10 by Google and Samsung is likely to have a bigger screen and a better screen resolution.
But for users there will always be the question of price as well. The 10-inch tablet won't cost $199 and could be priced within the same range as the iPad.
The big suspense for India users will be surrounding the launch date for the country. The last Samsung-Google Nexus smartphone was never officially launched in India and even the Nexus 7 hasn't been launched as yet. Hopefully, Google won't abandon India this time.
If SwiftKey Had A Baby With Swype, Meet SwiftKey Flow
SwiftKey has long been a popular keyboard alternative. What makes it different from your typical stock Android keyboard is that it has a sophisticated learning engine that adapts to your typing and gets better over time. Basically, very similar to voice recognition, that is if you allow Google to learn from it.
Also, you can give SwiftKey access to your social networking accounts, even email account, so it can analyze what you've said and, again, adapt. Swype is another keyboard alternative that, instead of typing, you simply swipe with your finger from word to word. It's actually very accurate and a pretty cool way to quickly say whatever it is you need to say.
Now, there's a new app in town called SwiftKey Flow. It has everything users love about the original SwiftKey, except now it has Swype-like features. Looking at the video at the end of this post, it looks to be very responsive. Of course, if you don't want to use the gesture-based typing, no problem. You can simply turn it off.
However, here's the downside: The app isn't out yet. Although, if you want to get an email when the beta is released, you can go here and enter your email.
