Steve Jobs has resigned from his post as CEO

Steve Jobs, the founder and visionary behind Apple, one of the world's most innovative technology and consumer product companies, has announced his resignation as CEO today. He will remain chairman of the board.

Jobs, 56, co-founded Apple in 1976 with Steve Wozniak. During his storied tenure at Apple, which has sold over 300 million iPods and nearly 100 million iPhones in the last decade, Jobs has developed a cult-like following among Apple enthusiasts, and been lauded by marketers and product designers around the world.

In 2004, Jobs had surgery for pancreatic cancer, and in 2009 underwent a liver transplant. His health has had "ups and downs," a source tells The New York Times.

Technically, Jobs has been on medical leave from Apple since January, but has appeared publicly a number of times, most notably to announce iCloud, Apple's newest cloud storage initiative.

In the hours after his resignation was announced, Apple stock fell nearly five percent.

His resignation letter read:

"To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:

I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple's C.E.O., I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.

I hereby resign as C.E.O. of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.

As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as C.E.O. of Apple.

I believe Apple's brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.

I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.

Steve"

A Trillion Page views for Facebook

facebook_stats

An updated list of the most-visited sites on the web is released by Google and it should not come as any surprise that Facebook takes the top spot with 870 million unique. YouTube and Yahoo are next with 790 M and 590 M unique respectively.

Google, maybe for competitive reasons, doesn’t share traffic data of its own site, or that of Gmail, in the Ad Planner report. Google+ is growing but the user base is still relatively small for the site to become part of this report.

A Trillion Page Views

Facebook hit a new milestone in June this year - the site touched a trillion page views from the 870 million* people who visited Facebook that month.

[*] Officially, Facebook has 750+ million users but the number of unique visitors who flock Facebook every month is much higher because certain section of the site – Facebook Pages and Profiles for example – are open to non-users as well.

Facebook says that people spend over 700 billion minutes per month on the site and now we also know that, on an average, one user visits 1150 pages on Facebook in a month. That’s impressive considering that YouTube, with all the entertaining and viral content, manages only 126 views per unique visitor per month.

Dear HP: Please Keep Making Those TouchPads

HP decided to shutdown it webOS operations and support and slashed HP touchpads for $99. Now the demand has increased such a high that HP can rethink of building it once again. Apps developers have come forward as people have the hardware to run it now.
Tech Guys have gone crazy about the $99 touchpad. In my group of 400 people, 102 touchpads were purchased and to my surprise the company Barnes and Noble cancelled few of the orders later that evening just due to unavailability of the products.
You might not have seen such a massive sale of any technical product in recent past or I would rather say in history. Unfortunately I could not purchase one as before making payment, a pop up came and said “Oops, you can not purchase it, the item has been removed from your shopping cart”. and when I returned back to the website, it was out of stock.
Anyways, it has proved the market situation where people are ready to have their second touchpad if the price goes low.
I am not sure whether HP would re-think on supporting webOS or android would take it over here on. But this was one the historic decision from the House of HP.

Blackberry 9900 Bold & Touch - Review

Take a first look at the BlackBerry Bold 9900, RIM's newest smartphone. Resembling the original Bold 9000, it has been upgraded and offers a 1.2 GHz CPU, 2.8-inch touchscreen with "Liquid Graphics," 5-megapixel camera with 720p HD video recording, and a spacious QWERTY keyboard. Carrier partnerships and pricing haven't been announced just yet, but the series will be landing "beginning this summer."

BlackBerry die-hards will love it, but can it compete with the Android, iOS, Windows Phone 7, and webOS devices that are coming out this summer?

HP TouchPad Sold out for $99

When HP said it would kill off the TouchPad in Q4, there was some confusion about which Q4 it meant — would the company attempt to sell the fated tablet for several more months, or drop it cold turkey? We think the image above says it all. PreCentral discovered that HP intends to cut the price of the tablet by up to $350 this weekend, at least in Canada. You can actually order a 16GB TouchPad right now from FutureShop for $99.99, or a 32GB model for a cool $150. (Best Buy Canada lists the same prices, but claims that it’s out of stock at the moment.) Good luck finding them for that price, though — even if the reports are true that hundreds of thousands of the slates are stockpiled in warehouses right now, that’s quite the steal. We imagine even those who purchased at the Staples discount are liable to feel some buyer’s remorse at the news.
Update: The mythical white 64GB TouchPad has also appeared at HP’s US website today, for $599.99. Something tells us you won’t be buying one at that price.

Update 2: Looks like you won’t need to visit Canada to get a $99 TouchPad after all: astute dealhounds discovered that if youclick on the right links at HP’s US websitewhile logged into a corporate or academic account, you can get the sale prices to show up right now. If that sounds like too much of a chore, you could also give HP a call. Some forumgoers are reporting success getting phone representatives to refund the several-hundred-dollar difference onto their credit cards.
Update 3: Don’t try picking one up at Best Buy, the big box retailer has pulled the TouchPad from the shelves and is apparently sending them all back to HP. It is extending the standard return window, however, and has a page up detailing those policies here. Finally, webOSroundupreports that if you purchased a TouchPad earlier, you can call HP (or your own retailer) to get a refund for the difference.
Update 4: If you thought this webOS fire sale weekend couldn’t get any crazier, think again. Best Buy has made an about-face and is now selling the TouchPad, limited to one per customer. See its updated FAQ here. Meanwhile, reports on Twitter and our tipline suggest that some of HP’s servers are starting to buckle under the load of new TouchPad activations.
Update 5: HP’s online store for Germany has reportedly dropped TouchPad pricing down to €99 (16GB), €129 (32GB), and €179 (64GB). The Veer and Pre 3 are also said to have seen their prices cut to €59 and €79, respectively. We haven’t yet been able to verify these numbers as the German store has been down all morning, potentially suffering from a similar deluge of demand as its American brethren. Thanks, David!

Who's the Boss

Stanford grads Larry Page and Sergey Brin co-founded Google in 1998, but Eric Schmidt took the CEO helm in 2001. Ten years later Schmidt became executive chairman, and Larry Page stepped back into the main leadership position as chief executive. At that time, Page released a statement: "Eric is a tremendous leader and I have learned innumerable lessons from him. His advice and efforts will be invaluable to me as I start in this new role."—Eric Markowitz
